Foundations: A Coffee Table Book Project

Every project in this book began not with a brief, but with a conversation. What follows is where those conversations led.

Foundations: Built on a Decade of Trust

I have learned over the years that the most important thing that happens on a project does not happen on site. It happens in a room, across a table, or sometimes just across a phone line, in the first hour of conversation with a client. That conversation, to me, is where a building actually begins.

This book is about those conversations.

It documents a body of work that began with a single interaction and grew into a series of projects with the Ogulu family. But what connects these projects goes beyond the buildings themselves. It is something no brief can specify and no drawing can fully capture: the accumulated weight of a relationship in which both parties learned to trust each other’s judgment.

Over time, the family learned to give my ideas the creative freedom to take shape, even when the possibilities felt a little uncertain, because they had seen me deliver before. I, in turn, learned to listen not just for what was asked, but for what was needed. The two, I have come to realise, are rarely the same thing.

Through these projects, this book reflects on what it means to design for people: to understand their needs, earn their trust and create spaces shaped by more than the brief alone. It brings together the work and the lessons that emerged along the way.
